16 Thoughts to “Cycle routes completely separated from driving routes

  1. Your idea of a good cycleway is probably something around 1 metre wide that you share with pedestrians.

  2. It does look a lot better than the rest of the country, but the routes still aren’t as direct and convenient as the way you would drive. The problem with Milton Keynes is that it was designed with cars in mind.

  3. There’s a busy main road near me which has 1 metre wide cycle lanes on each side, they are actually more dangerous than nothing because people pass closer.

  4. I live in Milton Keynes (UK) we have network of 200kms of cycleway its probably one of the best set up in are country but of course it was all green field just 30 years ago go to the older areas is the CITY and the same problems apply the paths just stop and its back on roads

  5. Until here in Britain something is done about making roundabouts and junctions with specific markings for cyclists, it wont matter how many cycle paths or cycle lanes they put in we will never be able to say we have a cycling infrastructure here.

Until they come down hard on motorists and delivery drivers parking in cycle lanes most of them are useless to cyclists. Many cycle lanes are so narrow they they might just as well not exist.

  6. A, U K Cyclist is not like one from the Netherlands if in the U K they would use a cycle lane if they had one , Not always a alternative in Uk but if you have one why not use it, Not talking about trips out people useing a bike to and from work in and out of my city,

  7. I DRIVE 28,000 MILES A YEAR IN MANCHESTER, CYCLE ROUTS IN AND OUT OF SOUTH MANCHESTER ARE GOOD , I CYCLE TO AND FROM MANCHESTER AND AROUND CITY AND I USE CYCLE ROUTS 25 MILES A DAY AND NIGHT WITH LIGHTS BUT A FEW WITH A DEATH WISH WANT TO USE THE ROAD I DO TOT UNDERSTAND WHY. IF YOU HAD A CYCLE ROUTE INTO A CITY WOULD YOU USE IT, { ALL I WANT TO SAY WHY DO YOU NOT WANT TO USE A CYCLE LANE ] if you want more use the ones you have now

  8. WHEN WE DO HAVE VERY GOOD CYCLE ROADWAYS WHY CYCLE ON THE ROADWAY, WE HAVE A 10 MILE CYCLE PATH BUT THEY STILL RIDE ON THE ROADWAY, AWNSER THAT

  9. IF WE HAD THEM ALL OVER IN THE U K THEY STILL WOULD NOT USE THEM ,WE HAVE SOME GOOD CYCLE LANES NEAR ME 8 TO 10 MILES LONG BUT CYCLIST STILL RIDE ON THE ROAD WITH A DEATH WISH SO WHY HAVE MORE

  10. Your right. It is a cultural aspect. The United Sates is a car centric society with less than 1% of 1% of the nation wide population using bicycles for transportation.

But none the less I wascurious as to the population of Assen. We have a year round population here of around 15,000 but with over 25,000 motor vehicles registered.

We are a microcosm of the United States and as a culture we are out of whack.

  11. “You can pan back and forth all day. There are always cyclists to follow.”
This time of year there are hardly any cyclists out and about. All this week riding to school and work, doing errands and back again I have seen perhaps 3 cyclists in my travels. in close to 75 miles traveled.

When I die and go to heaven, I hope it is just like Assen.

  12. 41% of all trips in Assen are done by bicycle. What is the population of Assen? On this small Island we have 70 miles of paved roads and over 25,000 registered cars. Nation wide in the States, the average car trip is 5 miles or less. I bet it’s closer to 1 mile here. A quote I once read comes to mind. Dealing with traffic congestion by building more roads is like trying to cure obesity with a bigger belt. Will we ever learn? Yes. if we look to Holland as an example.

    Great Video.

  13. David

An excellent video showing such exemplary bicycle facilities.
I have never seen such exemplary bicycle facilities in America.
Here it is all about accommodating the automobile at the expense of all else. Here there are new “Safe routes to school” laws but there are no cycle paths I would send my children out on.
In the states the powers that be deal with the growing traffic problem by building more roads which leads to more traffic, more congestion, more pollution.

  14. Pitty the British government wouldn’t take notice of sulch roads, and build them here instead of just talking of improving cycling.
